Toni Carrigan – Orchard Knob Elementary
May 7, 2026 — Teacher Appreciation Week is a time to celebrate the educators who show up every single day. The best educators look to connect and encourage. At Orchard Knob Elementary, one teacher doing exactly that is Toni Carrigan, a Developmental Communication Class (DCC) teacher.
Carrigan’s calling to teach runs deep. Growing up with a father who was an educator, she spent her childhood setting up a classroom in her bedroom, complete with a chalkboard and stuffed animals as her very first students. That early spark never left her. “I always wanted somebody to listen to me,” she laughed, reflecting on what drew her to the profession. That same desire to be heard is now the foundation of how she shows up for every child in her classroom.
In Hamilton County Schools, the Opportunity 2030 strategic plan calls for every student to have meaningful connections to their school through educators, staff, peers, and community. In Carrigan’s DCC classroom, that commitment is lived out every single day. She works intentionally to create welcoming, honoring spaces where each child feels known and valued. Those core principles are a cornerstone of the district’s Every Student Belongs commitment.
One of Carrigan’s greatest joys is watching her students grow. She recalled one student who arrived at the beginning of the year with little familiarity with school routines and expectations. Week by week, that student began to find her footing. She saw her communicating more, engaging more, and growing in confidence. “Watching the kids make progress feels good,” Carrigain said. Those moments of breakthrough are exactly why she comes back each day.
“Watching the kids make progress feels good.”
Building a sense of belonging is something Carrigan approaches with real intention. She gives students ownership of their learning environment. This looks like letting them choose where to hang their finished work, and celebrating standout students with photos displayed in the hallway. She loves involving the class by setting expectations at the start of the year. When one student earned recognition as the class honoree, he proudly pointed to his picture on the wall every time he walked by. “Anytime we can put up their pictures and make it about them, they feel like it is more of their classroom,” Carrigan explained. That is the heart of what Opportunity 2030 describes as creating a space where every learner is included and encouraged.
Carrigan also speaks openly about what people outside the classroom don’t always see. She spoke glowingly about the emotional weight teachers carry, and the deep care that drives every decision they make. She considers the slight pressure as a point of privilege. “Our intentions are so good,” she said. “We never want to see a child hurt or upset.” She expressed a genuine hope for a stronger partnership between schools and families, believing that when educators and parents work as a true team, students are the ones who benefit most.
When asked about a small win from this school year, Carrigan didn’t hesitate. “Making it to the end of the day,” she said with a laugh and then added, “because every day is full of lovable surprises.” It was a moment of humor, but also a quiet testament to the resilience required. Carrigan emphasized that this year she has grown in areas she didn’t know she needed to grow but is so thankful for what has been transformed in her.
“Being able to see where I can continue to grow,” she reflected, “has changed me.” That kind of self-awareness and commitment to growth is a gift for herself and to every student she serves.
This Teacher Appreciation Week, Hamilton County Schools and Orchard Knob Elementary is proud to honor Toni Carrigan. She is a teacher who builds belonging and champions growth in every student in her care so that they feel seen and valued. Her work is a living example of what Hamilton County Schools believes: that when every student belongs, every student can thrive and experience a future without limits.
